Romania is taking a big step forward as the new e-invoicing law will go into effect in January 2024. This legislation includes mostly VAT and other tax-related matters, but most importantly, it makes it obligatory to issue and receive electronic invoices.
E-invoicing and the RO e-Factura system first appeared in 2022, when it became necessary for electronic invoices to be used in the public (B2G) sector and in the private sector for high-risk fiscal goods.
The upcoming mandate will now be all-encompassing and requiring all invoices to be issued and received through the RO e-factura platform. Taxpayers must also issue those invoices in the RO_CIUS format, compliant with the EN 16931 standards.
